Their name, culture, and way of life are intimately tied to the land and the flowing waters of the Wolastoq (St. John River), which they have safeguarded for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But like many Indigenous communities across Canada, Tobique\u2019s history is marked not only by rich tradition and resilience\u2014but also by profound injustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Legacy of Displacement and Residential Schools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 19th and 20th centuries brought waves of disruption. Treaties were dishonoured, land was taken, and government policies aimed at erasing Indigenous identity took root.
